Box Score DURANGO, CO- The Dixie State College women's basketball team opened their 2009-10 regular season campaign on the road against the #5 ranked Fort Lewis College. The Skyhawks defeated the Red Storm 68-54.
In the first half, the Red Storm (0-1) was plagued by the shooting bug, only shooting 28.6% from field (6-21). Fort Lewis (5-0) playing in their fifth game of the year, seemed to have it together from the start shooting 42.9% in the first half and led 31-23 at the break.
In the second half, DSC seemed to get in rhythm and cut the Fort Lewis lead to one point on a
Veronica Siqueiros (Phoenix, AZ/Trevor G Brown) 3-pointer with 17:34 left. But, DSC could not get over the hump and the Skyhawks built the lead back to a game high 15 points.
Besides the shooting bug, DSC committed 27 turnovers and the combination of the two created and obstacle that the Red Storm could not overcome. Dixie State finished the game shooting 34.7% from the field.
Siqueiros led the Red Storm with a game high18 points, followed by
Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) and
Na'Chelle Chambers (Riverside, CA/JW North) eight points a piece.
The Skyhawks had three players in double figures, with Allison Rosel leading the way with 16 points. Fort Lewis shot 39.7% from the field. Fort Lewis also won the battle of the boards, collecting 43 to Dixie State's 32.
Dixie State will play again tomorrow afternoon in Durango, when they take on another RMAC team in Western State College of Colorado. Tip off is set for 2:00 PM.
