HONOLULU, HAWAII – In the Pacific West Conference, the uniqueness of mainland teams playing on the Hawaiian islands is a treat. But frequently, the performance of the mainland team in Hawaii determines final standing inside the conference. Heading into a crucial week of games, the Dixie State women's soccer team needed to begin with a victory and they got it – a commanding 5-0 shutout of Chaminade on Saturday afternoon in Honolulu.
Dixie State (8-3, 7-0 Pac West) controlled the tempo in the near-90 degree weather outshooting the Silverswords 27-1. Chaminade (0-11, 0-8 Pac West) was kept on their heels all match and only mustered one late shot.
The Red Storm scored the first half's only goal at the 6:52 mark when Camille Peterson set up a breakway goal for
Wendy Stratford (Layton, UT/Layton).
Two minutes into the second half,
Whitley Davis (Sandy, UT/Brighton) was fouled in the box and cashed in the PK to give the Storm a 2-0 advantage.
Jessica Michie (Purcellville, VA/Louden Valley) (unassited) and
Robin Huddleston (Saint George, UT/Dixie) (assisted by
Shayla Holmstead (Lehi, UT/Lehi)) netted shots within four minutes of each other (61:03, 64:57) to double-up the lead to four.
Peterson added a goal to her first half assist scoring past Silversword goalkeeper Marissa Minor in the 83rd minute.
Chaminade's only shot came with three seconds left. Casey Boggioni hit the post to miss putting a tally on the board by mere inches.
Dixie State returns to the pitch on Tuesday against BYU-Hawaii in Laie. The only regular-season match features the conference leading Red Storm and the one-loss Seasiders. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm Hawaiian.
