Box Score ST. GEORGE. UT – Before Monday night's Pacific West Conference game. the Dixie State Red Storm had only comeback once for a victory after trailing at the half. The ladies of Dixie picked the perfect spot to achieve it for a second time. Trailing by eight after the first period. Dixie State outscored Notre Dame de Namur 37-18 in the second half to pull away for a 72-61 win in Burns Arena.
The Red Storm improved to 9-7 on the season and 3-1 in the Pac West to keep pace with unbeatens Hawaii-Pacific and Grand Canyon. Notre Dame fell to 6-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
After two struggles on the road. Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont) (JR. Beaumont. CA) bounced back with a big double-double – 20 points and 10 rebounds – to pace Dixie State. Deney Phommabout (West Valley CIty. UT/Hillcrest) (SR. West Valley City. UT) has another solid effort from the bench chipping in 18 points. 15 coming in the first half.
Notre Dame de Namur took the early advantage 17-8 at the 12:14 mark after a Tanaia Keyes layup. DSC cut the lead to two with a six-nothing run. The lead would change hands twice before Dixie scored eight in a row to lead 35-29. NDNU answered with a 14-0 closing run over the final 4:35 to take a 43-35 halftime lead. The Argonauts shot an impressive 61.5-percent during the first 20 minutes.
The second half proved to be a reemergence of Dixie State Red Storm defense that had allowed opponents to shoot over 50-percent in three of the last five halves. Aggressive ball pressure forced 11 Argonaut turnovers in the second-half and held the California squad to just 26.7-percent from the field.
Dixie State started cutting the half time lead with a 12-2 swing over the first five minutes. The teams would see-saw until the 11:50 mark. the beginning of the game-turning 13-4 Dixie advantage giving the home squad a 62-55 lead. Clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch by Clark and Courtney Boyd (Keokuk. IA/Keokuk) (SR. Keokuk. IA) sealed the win for Dixie.
The Red Storm finished the game 23-60 from the floor (38.3-percent) including 25-percent from beyond the arc. Dixie shot better than average from the charity stripe. 19-25 (76-percent). The Argonauts hit 42.9-percent on the night (24-of-56).
