Second Half Surge Leads Dixie to Win (1/17/2009)

ST. GEORGE – Leading by three at the half. the women of Dixie State College shot out of the second half gate on a torrent 29-7 run en route to an 87-66 Pacific West Conference win over Hawaii Hilo University inside the Burns Arena on Saturday night.Dixie State improves to 8-5 overall and 2-0 within the Pac West while the Vulcans fall to 7-4. 2-2 in conference action.




The win pushes Dixie's win streak to four. the longest of the season.



Deney Phommabout (West Valley CIty. UT/Hillcrest) (SR. West Valley City. UT) scored a game-high 24 points and tied a Dixie State single-game record with six three-point buckets. Shanae Vaifanua (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane) (FR. Hurricane. UT) was second in scoring with 21 points. her third game this season over 20. Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont) (JR. Beaumont. CA) tallied her first DSC double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.



Dixie State got off to a low beginning and trailed 13-3 after shooting just nine percent over the first 10 minutes. DSC used a 12-0 run to take their first advantage at 26-23 and closed out the half with four straight points for a halftime lead. DSC shot 11 of 33 in the first 20 minutes.



In the second half. Dixie sped up the action. An eight-nothing opening run and a separate 15-0 blitz to build DSC's biggest lead of 28 at the 10:06 mark.



Dixie State finished the game shooting 28 of 75 (37.3 percent) including 9 of 27 from beyond the arc. DSC outrebounded the Vulcans 51-34. Hilo connected on 45.6 percent from the field (26-57) and was led in scoring by guard Eileen Pineda with 23.



DSC will return to conference action on the road at Grand Canyon University in Arizona next Thursday and Friday nights. January 22-23. Both games tip at 5:30 p.m. Mountain time.
