ST GEORGE. UT-The Dixie State College Women's soccer team welcomed fellow conference opponent BYU-Hawaii to St George Thursday evening. Last year BYU-Hawaii defeated Dixie State in the final match of the year to steal away the PACWEST championship from Dixie State.

Wendy Stratford (Layton, UT/Layton)'s breakaway goal with less than five minutes left gave Dixie State a 2-1 victory in its home opener over previously undefeated BYU-Hawaii on Thursday.

The score was made against reserve goalkeeper Scottie Prince. who entered the game after starter Becky Ploeger got injured.

Erika Mouritsen (Wellsville. UT/Mountain Crest HS '07) had DSC's first goal. which gave the team a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission. Erin Beeston (Edmond, OK/Edmond North) registered an assist.

DSC's defense held the Seasiders to seven shots and only one shot on goal - Kami Strait's score in the 60th minute.

DSC improved to 1-0. 3-3-1 while BYU-Hawaii fell to 1-1. 5-1.
