Box Score CHICO. Calif – Jessica Carver (Layton. UT/Layton) led Dixie State with 16 points en route to a 70-68 overtime victory Friday night over Chico State in the Carl's Jr. Coslet Classic. The victory was the first for Dixie State this season. moving their overall record to 1-2.
Carver's effort. which included 14 rebounds. came to a sudden and painful end just seconds into the overtime period due to a left knee injury.
Courtney Boyd (Keokuk. IA/Keokuk) added 14 points; Shanae Vaifanua (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane) had 10 and eight a piece from Deney Phommabout (West Valley CIty. UT/Hillcrest) and Jessie Ingraham (Tuscon. AZ/Canyon Del Oro) allowed Dixie to snap Chico State's 17-game home winning streak.
The Wildcats were paced by Renee Goldoff with a game-high 27 points and Natasha Smith scored 13 of her 15 points in the final 5:16 of the game.
Chico State's offense clicked early helping them build an 18-8 lead before DSC took their first lead of the regular season with a 17-6 run of their own. A lay-up by Phommabout with 10 seconds left in the half pushed Dixie ahead at the break 30-28.
The second half saw eight lead changes before Dixie took a five-point lead after Boyd connected from behind the arc and Phommabout hit two free throws.
A three-point lead with under ten seconds evaporated after DSC guard Sammi Griffiths (Orderville. UT/Valley) fouled Smith on an attempted three-pointer. The Chico guard sank all three freebies and sent the game in to extra time.
Chico built its final lead on two more Smith free throws at 62-60 with 4:30 left. Vaifanua made consecutive baskets to give DSC the advantage. Chico had a final chance down by two in the final seconds. but two attempts at short range both missed and sealed Dixie's first victory.
Dixie State will play Sonoma State on Saturday at 5:30pm Pacific in the Coslet Classic unofficial championship game. The Seawolves were victorious over Alaska-Fairbanks in the classic's opening game 68-62.
