ST GEORGE. UT-The Dixie State College volleyball team returned to action tonight against University of Hawaii Hilo. Last night UHH defeated DSC in five games. Tonight was different.
Dixie State opened the night by breaking a sea saw riddled game knotted at 24 all. Junior OH Katy Luna's kill broke the tie along with solid upfront blocking by Sophmore middle blocker Amanda Goodell (Fort Collins. CO/Rocky Mtn HS '07) and Luna closed out UHH in the first game 26-24.
Game two was all Dixie State. Early in the game UHH lead by as many as five points. Cami Johnson (Morgan. UT/Morgan HS '06) helped lead the Dixie State comeback and eventually the match would be all tied 14. Dixie State would win game two 25-18.
Game three and four where all UHH. They were led by middle Fabiene Saben and outside hitter Josimar Pinhiero. Saben had 19 kills and Pinhiero had 12. They won game three 25-19 and game four 25-11. Dixie State saw on five kills in game four and did not pass the ball very well as a team.
In the final game. Dixie State was faced for the fifth time this a deciding fifth game. Dixie State was 0-4 previous. including last night's heartbreaking loss to UHH.
Tonight match was a different story. They were able to capitalize on errors made by UHH and the play of outside hitter Luna and Johnson. Middle blocker Mariesa Nielson (Oak City. UT/Delta High '05) played well. getting an upfront presence late in the game. Dixie State dominated game five. winning 15-7.
Dixie State was led by a season high in kills from Luna with 21. Johnson's 14. and 38 assists from Sophomore setter Anna Bullard (Farmington. UT/Davis HS '07).
Dixie State will be off until they leave to play on the islands on Oct 14th against PacWest opponent Hawaii Pacific.
