Wells Homecoming. Dixie State defeats Humboldt State (10/11/08)

ST GEORGE. UT-What a Homecoming for the Dixie State College football team. especially Adam Wells (Kenmore. WA/Inglemoor). Today's opponent was Humboldt State University. In the two games last year against HSU. Wells rushed for 125 yards and 226 yards. both career highs. Today was no different. Wells had 21 carries for 186 yards and a touchdown. His score came on a 61 yard scamper that gave Dixie State a 14-0 lead late in the 3rd quarter.



In the first half it was all defense. Neither offensive team could find the endzone and the game was tied 0-0 at the half.



Looking to change the outcome of the previous four games and break their losing streak. the offense went to work to open the second half.  To open the 9 play. 79 yard drive. Dexter Hill (Pocatello. ID/Highland HS) found Kyser Christensen (Boise. ID/Centennial) for a 20 yard pass completetion. Hill then scrambled for 12 yards on a broken play. Hill again found Christensen on a 3rd and nine play for 14 yards for a Dixie State first down deep into HSU terriotory. The very next play Well rushed for 22 yards to the HSU 8 yard line. Finally. Dixie State scored to take the lead on a Hill eight yard bootleg for the touchdown.



Dixie State's final score came when Humboldt State scored with 13 minutes left in the 4th quarter. After a Wells fumble. HSU went 3 plays and 22 yards for the touchdown. On the insuing extra point. cornerback Richard May (Rockland. ID/Rockland HS) blocked the kick which then deflected off of Micah Harward (St George. UT/Dixie). that was then caught by Stephen Cook. Cook then scampered to the HSU 30 yard line where he pitched the ball to Aric Hutchinson (Ogden. UT/Bonneville HS) who ran the ball in for the two point defensive conversion.



Despite accumulating many points. the Dixie State offensive had 442 yards of total offense. Dexter Hill (Pocatello. ID/Highland HS) was 21-36 for 199 yards and added 44 yards rushing to Wells' 186 yards.



The Dixie State defensive allowed only 73 yards of rushing. 21 yards below their season average. Linebacker Teddy Owens (Pleasant Grove. UT/Pleasant Grove HS) had a monster day. collecting 12 tackles (8 solo. 4 asst) that included two sacks. three tackles for a loss. and a pass break up. The front line of the Dixie State kept pressure one the Humboldt offense all day. The HSU front allowed six QB sacks.



With the win Dixie State (2-5. 1-4) picks up its first GNAC win and snapped its four game losing streak. Humboldt State (2-5. 0-4) remains winless in the conference. Dixie State will travel to Arcata.CA for the conference rematch on Nov 8th. which will be DSC's final game of the year.



This week DSC travels to Monmouth. OR to take on Western Oregon. In their previous meeting in St George. WOU defeated Dixie State 34-27. The game is slated to begin at 3 PM MT and can be heard on 890 KDXU.
