Rachel Young, from the women's cross-country team, is the 2011-2012 Dixie State College Female Athlete of the Year. Young had a dominant year individually and leading the Red Storm to the most successful year since the program’s reinstatement a few couple years ago.
Young, who didn’t run cross-country in high school and who competed in only one collegiate race prior to the 2011 season – won the individual title at the Pacific West Conference Championships with a time of 17:52.3 on the 5K course that wound through Estrella Mountain Regional Park in Arizona. She followed by earning All-Region honors for finishing in the Top 25 of the 2011 NCAA II West Region Cross Country Championship Saturday, Nov. 5, in Spokane, Wash.
Young placed 10th overall in a field of 165 runners by recording a time of 21:54 on the 6K course. The race was held at the Plantes Ferry Sports Complex.
